Van Thang Doan (William)

Founder, VT Consulting · Data/AI Engineer

I am Van Thang Doan (William) — founder of VT Consulting, working in data and AI from Sydney, Australia.

My background sits at the intersection of business analysis and data engineering: eliciting requirements and standardising processes for digital platforms in the public and education sectors, building the databases underneath them, designing the validation rules that keep the data clean, and turning raw data into reporting that decision-makers actually use. Before that I spent three years as an investment consultant at VPS Securities, where I built a quantitative risk management framework for a client book — an experience that still shapes how I approach every problem: start from the real constraints, then reach for the model.

I am currently completing a Master of Data Science and Innovation at the University of Technology Sydney, focusing on data engineering and applied AI systems.

Experience

  1. Oct 2022 – Nov 2023

    Project Coordinator & Business Analyst

VinUniversity — Agile Innovation Center · Hanoi, Vietnam

    Business & Systems Analysis

    • Elicited and documented functional and technical requirements for a provincial Green Growth Index management platform, including field-level data validation rules (data types, permitted ranges, dependency logic) that prevented invalid entry at source and improved data quality across 3 participating provinces.
    • Designed dashboard and reporting requirements and wireframe templates that guided the vendor's build of the platform's in-app reporting module.
    • Authored user-centric UAT scenarios and executed end-to-end system testing; logged and triaged defects with the vendor through to resolution. The platform was successfully deployed and handed over to provincial government users.
    • Mapped end-to-end approval workflows as swimlane process diagrams, standardising document review and sign-off between university institutes and the Ministry of Education for VinUniversity's Master's and PhD program accreditation submission.
    • Developed technical requirement specifications and a weighted vendor evaluation scorecard for a province-wide English learning application (Khanh Hoa Province), enabling an objective, criteria-based supplier selection.
    • Defined feature catalogues, navigation logic and database requirements for external web development vendors, ensuring downstream integration compatibility with university and corporate group systems.

    Data & Research

    • Built and analysed a benchmarking dataset of curricula from leading global universities, comparing learning pathways, course structures and credit loads; translated findings into recommendation reports used by academic institutes to design internationally aligned programs.
    • Coordinated a team of 30 student research assistants across literature reviews, data collection and quality checks, plus delivery of the centre's flagship academic conferences and visiting-researcher programs.

    Financial Planning & Control

    • Owned annual budget planning for the centre, building bottom-up cost models for each research stream and event.
    • Managed budget execution end-to-end in SAP — raising spend approval requests, drawing project funds, processing contractor invoices and casual staff payroll — maintaining full-year spend within the approved budget.

CRM & Admissions Analytics (3-month rotation — Admissions Department)

    • Administered the applicant database in Salesforce, maintaining data integrity across 2 applications and ensuring accurate pipeline records throughout the admissions cycle.
    • Configured Salesforce reports and structured Excel extracts with pre-built filters and ranking views, enabling admissions officers to self-serve candidate shortlists and identify high-calibre applicants for scholarship counselling without raising ad-hoc data requests.
    • Designed a counselling status tracker capturing stage-by-stage progress for every applicant, giving the team real-time visibility of funnel conversion and follow-up priorities.
  2. Oct 2021 – Jun 2022

    Business Analyst (promoted from Intern)

    HADTech · Hanoi, Vietnam

    • Conducted market and Business Model Canvas analysis for the company's e-learning platform; identified an underserved Grade 6–9 (lower secondary) segment with distinct learning behaviours from the saturated Grade 10–12 market, and repositioned the product roadmap around that segment.
    • Designed and built the platform's master curriculum database, structuring Vietnam's secondary and high school syllabus into a normalised hierarchy of subjects → lessons → exercises to serve as the single source of truth for content delivery.
    • Specified front-end field logic, selection rules and navigation flows — defining what each control displays, what conditions drive each pathway, and how users reach the correct learning content — and handed these to engineering as build-ready requirements.
    • Ran customer experience research across 2 secondary schools, designing a structured evaluation instrument scoring each feature, UI element and completeness dimension; synthesised 300 responses into a prioritised list of product gaps and recommended fixes adopted in the following release cycle.
  3. Apr 2019 – May 2022

Remote Investment Consultant (promoted from Intern)

    VPS Securities · Hanoi, Vietnam

    • Managed a portfolio book of 20 clients with US$5M in assets under management, delivering an average annual return of ~23%.
    • Produced macroeconomic, political and sector outlook research reports, translating top-down analysis into actionable sector and single-stock recommendations for retail investors.
    • Performed technical analysis using RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, SuperTrend, Elliott Wave and trend-channel/triangle patterns to set entry, exit and target price recommendations.
    • Extracted and analysed client transaction data from the BDVPS trading platform to profile trading behaviour, distinguishing rules-based from emotionally driven activity; used the findings to segment clients and deliver tailored coaching that reduced churn-style overtrading.
    • Profiled each client's financial position and risk appetite to construct personalised, risk-adjusted portfolios.

Risk Management Framework (designed and applied across the client book)

    • Built a goal-based risk capacity model for each client: mapped primary and secondary monthly income streams, quantified committed and non-discretionary expenditure, set a required emergency-reserve ratio, and derived the genuinely investable surplus — ensuring only discretionary capital entered the market.
    • Anchored each portfolio to the client's 5–10 year financial objectives, then calculated the maximum loss that client could absorb without compromising those objectives — sizing risk to capacity rather than to sentiment.
    • Structured portfolios on a core–satellite allocation: a defensive core of large-cap blue chips selected on attractive P/E, sustainable earnings growth and confirmed technical trend, paired with a satellite sleeve of momentum names attracting strong capital inflow for short-term growth.
    • Enforced a staged entry (scaled DCA) discipline — an initial deployment of only 15–20% of the allocated position at the identified accumulation zone, with further tranches released only once the uptrend was confirmed. This capped the loss on any incorrect entry at 5–7% of the opening tranche, or ≈1% of total investable capital per failed entry.
